SARAH BARRON, PH.D.
Dr. Sarah Barron is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist. While trained as a generalist practitioner of clinical psychology, she also possesses a unique skill set to help clients address traumatic experiences. She began her career by specializing in assessment and evidence-based care for trauma-related disorders. Dr. Barron has spent most of her career within the Department of Veterans Affairs working with veterans suffering from a variety of conditions, particularly posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and substance misuse. She has extensive experience treating trauma-related conditions due to combat exposure, natural disasters, accidents, sexual assault, child abuse, and other forms of trauma exposure.
Outside of working with individuals with PTSD, Dr. Barron enjoys working with individuals struggling with panic symptoms, obsessive compulsive disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, and phobias. She is competent to treat depressive disorders and mild to moderate substance use disorders. She also has training and expertise with psychological assessment, including personality testing and neuropsychological screening.
In addition to her clinical expertise, Dr. Sarah has extensive experience as an administrator, teacher, mentor, and is a recognized subject matter expert in PTSD. In her initial position within the Department of Veterans Affairs, she was tasked with building an intensive outpatient program for Veterans recovering from PTSD and substance use disorders. After this program earned significant success, Dr. Sarah went on to become the PTSD Section Chief for the Bay Pines VA Healthcare system, overseeing a large interdisciplinary staff and managing outpatient, intensive outpatient (e.g., day-treatment) and residential PTSD programming. She was selected to be a regional subject matter expert for PTSD within the VA system. Dr. Sarah now serves as the PTSD Section Chief of the South Texas VA Healtcare System and has served in high level administrative roles, such as Acting Assistant Chief of Mental Health, due to her high performing programs and skillful leadership.
Dr. Sarah works closely with experts at the National Center for PTSD and is active in research, training, and education about gold-standard care for trauma-related disorders. As part of this work, she advises professionals around the country regarding the administrative and clinical aspects of high quality mental health care. She has facilitated many forms of educational programming, including large conferences, for interdisciplinary mental health professionals and healthcare administators.
In addition to her professional work, Dr. Sarah enjoys spending time with her family and pursuing her hobbies. A long distance runner, having completed multiple half-marathons and one full marathon to date, Dr. Sarah is always pursuing new challenges. She also enjoys creative outlets, spending time practicing baking, pottery/sculpture, painting, sketching, and even tattooing.
